Not that I wouldn't love to play it under the right conditions but here's my findings:
1. If more than 2 of us players are at the table, can't get in enough hands per shuffle. Always seem to be fighting too many players. I look like as if I'm playing musical chairs/tables.
2. Great if 1 on 1 but we stand out. I might as well wear a sign that says 'CARD COUNTER'. Bets change just about every hand. Gotta keep spread low.
3. Can't play very long or your just another #86. Can't get it enough playing time.
4. Boring game. Can't double after splits. They took the fun out of it.
5. Cards are usually dealt face down. Can't count until after my hand is over and all cards are turned. (I always play 1st base so I have a perfectly sized bet before each deal.)
6. Can't get an accurate count for ins cause people want to hide there cards for some stupid reason. Can't see what's all out on the table. Sometimes people on opposite side of the table have pairs of face cards. They show up after I get sucked into wrongfully buying ins.
With a shoe, I have none of these problems. Takes a lot more patience though. Gotta be able to count fast and accurate too.
If I'm missing something special about single deck, somebody please hit me over the head with it. Let me know what it is! I think double deck is a little better though.

The most common game of blackjack is dealt out of a 6-deck or 8-deck “shoe” (a plastic, card-dispensing device). Single and double deck games are still alive and well but not all casinos that have blackjack will have single and double deck so the “shoe games” are a little more common. I began my career playing Atlantic City which was mostly 8 deck games. So a good penetration 6 deck game is much better than what I was used to. Things I like about a shoe game are that if you can play heads up or even with one other player, you can rack up rounds (and EV) pretty quickly with a decent dealer. If a casino is too crowded, avoid the pitch games and Wong into some shoes now and then, but don't expect to catch any hole-cards from a shoe. Or maybe try a little depth-charging. You have to enter a casino with an open mind. Don't go there looking for a specific good game (as in: 'I heard they have a six-deck game with S17 and LS. There are also slight variations in strategy when you play a 6 deck game versus a single deck game. Rather than teach you 9 different basic strategy charts for each variant of blackjack you will ever see, we decided to run our simulation against the games people will most commonly see and teach one basic strategy that is sufficiently effective.

Hey everyone, this is my first post as I am quite new to the forum, but I have serveral questions I think would be best asked all at one time. I have a few casinos I visit throughout the midwest, and for the most part, the rules tend to be the same: dealer hits soft 17, double any card, split any card (aces hit once), doubling allowed after splitting. I have read a few blackjack books since I started playing a few years ago, with Cardoza's quick guide to winning blackjack on my desk at the moment. If you have this book, I use the Atlantic City Multiple Deck chart for my basic strategy play. Questions for playing with a 6 deck shoe:
1)using the hi/lo method with (10-A = -1) (7,8,9 = 0) (2-6 = 1) what running count should i start with as I enter a brand new shoe? I have done a lot of internet research, and for the most part, places say different things. I generally begin a shoe from the 0 position, but I would like to be more precise with my count. The places I play will show the burn/blind if asked.
2)I use a betting table based on the true count with a spread from 5 to 25:
True Count Units bet
0-1 1
2-3 2
4-5 3
6-7 4
8 and up 5
I have thought about making the spread wider to increase my chances of having more on the table when the deck is in my favor. My question is what you would suggest in this spread as far as making or not making changes? I don't have a huge bankroll, but I like to bring 100-150 to the table per session.
